Bet you didn’t expect this! Hyundai unveiled its HCD-14 Concept at the Detroit Motor Show and wowed everybody who laid eyes on it. This concept is an official preview of the next-generation Genesis, and that is the reason why it is so astonishing.
Even if the production version looks 70 percent like this, it is going to be a huge leap forward for Hyundai. The current Genesis isn’t bad, but there is nothing special about it. The HCD-14 on the other hand, oh my!
Coupe-like silhouette and rear-hinged rear doors aside, because stuff like those never make it into the production version, the HCD-14 features lots of advanced technologies that will be used in the next Genesis. It has a 3D gesture recognition system that is said to help the driver stay focused on the road while he operates the car’s equipment, as well as an advanced head-up display.
The HCD also has a new chassis reinforced with high-tensile steel in key places to make it extra rigid, plus multi-mode power steering. These can be hints at the fact that the next Genesis is going to be a better car to drive, or as Hyundai puts it ‘driver-centric’.
Apparently they didn’t have time to come up with a fancy powertrain for this concept, so it has the old TAU V8 engine hooked up to an 8-speed transmission. A great effort nonetheless.
